I hadn't seen her for ages, so decided to call in on my friend Lisa, after I'd dropped the kids off at school. The traffic was terrible due to roadworks just down the road from the school, so it was almost 10 o'clock before I pulled up outside her smart, semi detached house on the new estate.
She looked pleased to see me, we'd known each other for years, since well before either one of us was even married, and we'dhelped each other through three children's worth ofmorning sickness, labour pains, sleepless nights and nappy rash. I could see that she'd been working on her laptop, and she told me that she had been looking for some life insurance online, becauseshe andher husband had thought it was about time they got a quote or two to compare.
'We need to provide for the kids if anything were to happen to either one of us' she insisted, 'it just cuts down on the liability of money problems if we were left on our own'. I had neverreally seen her so grown up and organised, thinking of the future, Istrongly suspected that it had been Johns idea,he was a real steadying influence on her, shehad always been a bit scatterbrained before she met him. They were a good couple and complimented each other well. She told me that shehad just put in a search for 'life insurance online' and had loads to choose from. She went into the kitchento put the kettle on, and we were soon busy chatting about other things -the weather, the new infant school teacher, and the sudden influx of Christmas things in the shops, even though it was still only September.
A few days later I had a few minutes to spare, so thought I'd surf the net for a while. Not really thinking about what I was doing, I just typed in 'life insurance online' and sure enough, there were thousands of sites to choose from. Maybe Johns steadying influence on Lisa was rubbing off on me too, it really was a scary thought to be left alone with the children and no money, and not something which had ever even occurred to me, after all,I was still only in my twenties, and my husband was 30 just last month.
'What are you doing?' asked my husband Paul, as he came in a few minutes later. 'I'm looking for life insurance online'. 'Good idea'was his surprisedreply.
